In 2009, millions of Iranians watched on TV as filmmaker Maziar Bahari, a guest of honor at IDFA 2007, was forced to make a false confession. Filmmakers, celebrities, community leaders and other notable personalities were on hand as awards were presented in various categories such as Best Director, Best Documentary, Best Feature, Audience Favorite and more.

In addition, the Reza Badiyi Achievement Award was presented to Shaun Toub for his broad contributions to film and television.
